Couples who once couldn’t keep their hands off each other are now sitting on opposite ends of the couch, feeling more like roommates than lovers.

It rarely starts with one big betrayal. It starts small — a string of little moments that pile up until a quiet voice takes over: they don’t care about me. I can’t trust them. I’m alone in this.

Slowly, the connection stretches thinner. The attraction fades. Sex becomes a chore, or it stops altogether. And most couples chalk it up to getting older, or “life just being busy.”

I want to offer a different explanation — one rooted in biology, not blame. Because once you understand why this happens, you can actually change it.

Why We’re Wired This Way

Sex is determined twice during pregnancy. Once when our sex organs form, and again later, when our brain pathways are built.

In biological females, the neural pathways that develop tend to support oxytocin — the hormone that helps the brain track nuance, notice patterns, and stay tuned in to the needs of a baby (or a partner) in a way that supports survival.

In biological males, those pathways tend to support vasopressin — the hormone associated with protecting and caring for a partner, especially during pregnancy. It’s what gives him the drive to take action, to step up, to guard what matters.

Think of it as the yin and yang of partnership. It’s also why so many men are naturally romantic early in a relationship — noticing what makes her happy, bringing the flowers, learning her patterns almost like clockwork. (Pavlov’s dogs, essentially — just with better intentions.)

Where It Goes Off the Rails

The trouble starts when we expect our partner to think and operate the way we do.

Many women carry the invisible weight of scheduling, prepping, teaching, emotionally regulating, and anticipating everyone’s needs — all fueled by that oxytocin-driven wiring. And it’s exhausting when a partner doesn’t just get it.

But here’s what happens on the other side: every time he’s corrected, told he did it wrong, or made to feel like he should’ve known better without being asked — it chips away at his confidence. He starts to distrust his own instincts. Over time, he stops being proactive and starts waiting to be told exactly what to do.

Multiply that by thousands of small moments, and both partners’ nervous systems start to disconnect. Instead of turning toward each other, you each turn inward — managing your emotions alone instead of sharing them. And if you’ve started to see your partner as a child who can’t be trusted, or as a nagging parent... that’s not exactly a recipe for desire.

Connection, feeling heard, and validation aren’t extras. They’re what keep a bond — and a sex life — alive for the long haul.

Finding Your Way Back

The good news: this pattern can be repaired. Here’s where to start.

For women: Start naming what you appreciate. Say it, and mean it. Tell him kindly and specifically what you need — because he genuinely wants to know. When men feel like they have a cheerleader instead of a critic, they keep showing up. Remember: men often do best with a clear “manual” — specific instructions, not hints. Let him see the finished product and feel proud of it. That pride is what keeps him coming back to try again.

For men: Your role is to protect and attune. Learn the nuances of her stress, and look for the gaps you can fill before being asked. If she’s exhausted, pick up dinner. Rub her feet. Tell her she’s doing an incredible job. Attunement will take you further than almost anything else.

If you notice something that needs doing, do it. Women today are carrying so much of the leading, deciding, and planning already — so when you lead, let it come from care and protection, not ego. Something as simple as, “Let’s go for a walk tonight, you always feel better afterward,” is a small act of attunement that lifts the whole relationship.

This is the work I do with couples every day — helping you find your way back to trust, connection, and each other. If this resonated, I’d love to have you join us.

Thanks for reading Miran's Substack! Here are some things to keep in mind and strategies to keep you connected despite the emotion and physical pain.

Thanks for reading Miran's Substack! Whether it’s autoimmune or chronic pain from trauma or an accident, it’s doing what it thinks it needs to do to protect us against future invasion. So this pain is coming from something and the body is doing what it knows best, to protect.

The body responds to our emotions, so if you are angry, frustrated, hopeless, the body will respond with those chemicals and therefore physical reactions from those emotions. If we feel acceptance, compassion and patience, the body will respond as such, and allow for some of our own healing. This changes the nervous system’s message that it needs to continue to fight to protect, allowing it to eventually feel more safe in the “rest and digest” state. That does not mean this goes away, it doesn’t but it can lessen the triggers, the length of suffering and help the body in it’s process of healing as much as it can.

Here some things that can help you get into this state of acceptance, compassion and patience with Chronic Illness.

Acceptance: yes, it sucks but the body is doing what it’s programmed to do. It’s not broken, YOU are not broken. This only perpectuates the body’s need to fight against itself if we tell it constantly that it’s broken.

Compassion: You or your partner have been through hard things. Your body has done what it needs to survive this trauma. Thank it. Give it compassion for doing it’s best.

Partners: if you have a partner with chronic illness, know that it’s very real. The body is actually creating these physical responses to create the pain your loved one is experiencing. It does this without our own awareness usually but an overreaction of trauma responses that the body is recieving and reacting to unconsciously.

Patience: The more you fight it, the harder it will be. I know this part is HARD. Give the body the rest. If you can do something together to support the current state. You can read (or read to your partner), cuddle, tell stories, play a card game, get couples cards (Ester Perel has a game called “Where Do We Begin” that is very bonding with easy questions) gently rub your partner. Continue to tell yourself that you can get to what you need to later.

Partners: The more you can have patience for your partner, the less pressure and guilt they will feel about a state they can not control or stop. The more their system can feel safe in a connection with you, the less their body will need to protect itself. So these acts of love go a long way to the process.

Investigate: go beyond medical doctors. Look for holistic care, such as acupuncture, herbalism, massage, lymphatic massage, or other things to get the blood and energy moving helping the body to reroute the narratives that are stored. Write down your food intake, emotional status, physical movement to see if there are any connections to triggers that your body is recognizing.

Partners: this is not your job for them, but sometimes you might notice patters or connections that you can gently point out to them, or helping them in moments they are physically less capable to get what they need. It is not your job to be a caretaker, but it is to be a loving and supportive partner.

Know you and your partner will get back to life again soon. These moments are temporary and we move through them. Enjoy the good moments, knowing these harder moments can just be small set backs, pauses, time outs of life but there is still plenty of time to get back to life and the always present to do lists. Relationships are give and take. What does each person bring to the dynamic for this give and take relationship? Remember just because your body puts a pause on things, doesn’t mean you don’t contribute fully to your life with someone, make yourself a list if you need to.

Need more support?
